Startup Projects Background

Ive had this idea for months….

My Business

To sell a new, unique, brand of everyday wants in stores and supermarkets.
To sell products like Bacon, Milk, Eggs, Bread and Beans, with similar or the same styled packaging and price to give customers a recognizable brand.

Black packaging with white font writing – making things simple for customers to chose the product.
It would have simple names on products, i.e. 8 Free Range Eggs, Plain White Bread, Baked Beans….

Nothing like it that is currently in the market.
One style in various different departments of food for customers to recognize.
If customers like one product they may chose to try another product, it will be easy to find different products as they will have the same styled colour/packaging.

Just wanted to get some feedback, I think its a good idea and I’ve had some good ideas for the brand name.
My major concern would be getting into a market that is already strong with the likes of Heinz and Hovis.
Another concern is the packaging, as I would have no idea where to create or make a design from i.e. the heinz paper packaging around the steel can of beans.

Ok so I see and understand your USP but I wonder if it is enough, you may need to find further USP’s, I mean perhaps all of you ingredients could be sourced within the country, this is marketable. You could target a certain sector of people, for example students who don’t want to spend their time cooking and looking for ingredients could just by your, no frills brand that gets the job done. You would be looking at a high startup cost, do you have an investor on board?

Labels would be easy.

Good luck

Im a student myself and if I think if people saw products around the supermarket with the same recognisable packaging on different products then they may be more inclined to buy them and be loyal to the brand.
I have no investor, its just an idea that I have a strong belief in.

I also think you should increase your USP but maybe not where you source it from as everyone does that sort of thing anyway. If you target students, at least at first, then I would try to make the products very cheaply, because as you know most students are not really well off. The problem really is startup costs, they will be huge. You need to contact a few factories – maybe start looking on Alibaba if you want to go down a cheap route. Look at kickstarter for raising the money.

Start up costs will be huge like you said, Ive thought about starting off with easier products like beans and canned products, and if it became successful moving into more complicated products like bacon and milk – which would both need refrigeration.
Im not sure what route to go down, although I may contact my local ASDA and see if I can get some information behind what it would take for them to stock my product.

Yes i agree, beans would be a good product to start with. You will just need as low a MOQ as you can get. Contact all of the supermarkets, however at first it may be easier to stock up in independant shops. If you are a student why not contact the local university shop? Then try to get it stocked in all university shops. In fact to gain publicity and money you could do fundraising events at uni, this will really get people involved aswell as giving you the chance to get feedback and contacts.

What I would do is target my local superstore to see if they would sell it…
Its not like I would be able to stock every supermarket store in the country!!
